While the medieval world gave lip service to ideals of chivalry, the reality of late medieval life was a violent one of pillage and murder. Invading armies killed everyone in their path, women and children where routinely hacked to death or eviscerated for sport. The popular fairy-tale image of the medieval woman is powerless and delicate, but in reality women commanded castles, plotted and led rebellions and plotted assassinations. The medieval world was a world of death, sweeping plagues, disease and constant warfare.
