The fourteenth century saw the increased development of black gunpowder in Europe, made from just the right mixture of charcoal, saltpeter and sulfur. The first recorded use of this type of gunpowder is in China many centuries before, but early medieval conflict was not conducted with firearms. The availability of highly effective cannons would ultimately bring an end to the importance of siege warfare, rendering the castle a useless weapon for defense, leading to the open man to man pitched battles, which largely characterized later struggles such at the English Civil War. A big problem caused by the use of black gunpowder was the huge amount of smoke that it generated, musketeers often being unable to see very much after firing a few rounds unless they had the benefit of being upwind of the enemy. Black gunpowder also left heavy fouling residues in weapons. Consequently black gunpowder has been superceded by smokeless nitro-glycerine derivatives as alternatives in modern weapons.
