While the medieval world gave lip service to ideals of chivalry, the reality of late medieval life was a violent one of pillage and murder. Invading armies killed everyone in their path, women and children where routinely hacked to death or eviscerated for sport. The popular fairy-tale image of the medieval woman is powerless and delicate, but in reality women commanded castles, plotted and led rebellions and plotted assassinations. While much of our web site covers weaponry used in battles, weapons were a part of everyday life for everyone, man woman and child, peasants often turning farming implements to weapons as necessary. The medieval world was a world of death, sweeping plagues, disease and constant warfare.
