Medieval sword design is heavily influenced by the Roman long sword or spatha. When the Roman empire fell swords gradually became larger and longer weapons more suited to piercing armor. As the medieval period developed the slashing actions of broadswords gave way to more thrusting techniques which required considerable skills to learn. Through the Renaissance dueling with rapiers became a common method of dispute resolution with combatants believing that God would favor the person in the right over the disputed matter. Much warfare had Christian motivations and the crusades were a bloody campaign waged to enforce Christianity as the rightful religion of Europe and the holy lands. Consequently many medieval swords bore religious motifs.
